Three settings we write for Halloween

Pick the night.

Tell us which one on the form (or describe your own). The victim, the house and the plot are ours; the suspects are your friends.

The manor on the moor, 1888

The will is read at midnight. The heir is dead by a quarter past. Every guest stood to gain, and the storm has taken the bridge.

A 'the lights go out' moment is written into Round 2; the host guide says exactly when to flick the switch.

The séance, 1922

A medium, eight sitters, one candle. When the candle is relit the medium's assistant is on the floor and the spirit cabinet is locked from the inside.

Quietest setting; good for a table that wants to think rather than shout.

Camp Hollow, 1979

The last night of the season at a summer camp nobody has booked since the incident. The caretaker's chair is empty and the generator keeps cutting out.

The funniest of the three; every guest's secret is a camp rule they broke that summer.

How the evening runs.

Before the starter. Hand out the sheets. Read the opening aloud by candlelight. Everyone introduces themselves in character, two minutes each.

Starter: Round 1. Every guest has an alibi and one question to ask someone else, printed on their sheet. Let the table talk.

Main: Round 2. Read the three clues aloud, one at a time. Each guest opens their own Round 2 card: the secret they have been hiding, and what they saw. In the manor setting, this is where the lights go out.

Pudding: Round 3. Everyone opens their sealed card. Everyone writes an accusation on their menu. Read the solution.

Two to two and a half hours over three courses. The host plays too.

Why it is about your guests.

You give us two or three facts per person: the running joke, the catchphrase, who must be the villain, who wants a small part, who will try to solve it in ten minutes. Each character is built from those lines and nothing else; we never add a real fact you did not give us, and anything under “avoid” stays out. The sample shows eight lines of a host's notes turning into eight suspects.

Three questions people ask.

Can it be scary?

As scary as you tell us. Pick the tone on the form: funny with a cobweb or two, a proper gothic whodunit, or family-friendly with teens at the table. Nothing gory arrives unless you ask for it, and anything you list under “avoid” stays out.

Will it arrive before the 31st?

The kit is a PDF within 2 days of payment, so an order paid by the evening of 29 October is with you for Halloween night. Later than that, write to whodunitkit@mail.tab.bot before paying and we will say honestly whether it can be done.

Do I need costumes or props?

No. Each guest needs their own character sheet, folded; you need the host guide, the three clue cards and the solution, all in the PDF. A candle, a locked door and one dramatic reading of the opening do the rest.
